AFTER RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

The Coronation of the Virgin with Saints

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 34.1 x 29.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853217

A photograph of a drawing by Raphael now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no. WA1846.206). The sheet has been connected with a number of projects associated with Raphael, including a tapestry supposedly part of the Sistine Chapel series illustrating the 'Acts of the Apostles' and the Monteluce altarpiece.

Two variants of this composition are known: an engraving by the Master of the Die (see RCINs 853211-15) and a drawing (by G.F. Penni?) now in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no.3883; see RCIN 853219 for a photograph of it). For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
