AFTER A WORK BY THE SCHOOL OF RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

The Coronation of the Virgin with Saints

c.1860-76

Carbon print | 31.3 x 23.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853216

A photograph of a drawing now in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Milan (inv. no.2872). Both the authorship of the sheet and its preparatory role have been questioned. The drawing corresponds with an engraving by the Master of the Die after a design by Raphael (without the figure of God the Father and angels around), generally dated to around 1532. See RCINs 853211-13.

The Ambrosiana sheet is also close in composition and subject to a drawing by Raphael now in the Ashmolean, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.206); see RCIN 853217 for a photograph of it). A variant of this composition is a drawing (by G.F. Penni?) now in the Louvre (inv. no.3883); see RCIN 853219 for a photograph of it). Both drawings have been connected with a number of projects associated with Raphael. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
