AFTER A WORK ATTRIBUTED TO THE WORKSHOP OF RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

The Adoration of the Shepherds

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 29.6 x 22.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853257

A photograph of a drawing generally attributed to the workshop of Raphael (G.F. Penni?) now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.3460). Both the authorship of the sheet and its role have often been questioned. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References. The composition was engraved, in reverse and with a few differences, by an anonymous artist of the school of Marcantonio Raimondi. See RCIN 853253. The lower half of the composition has been used for the tapestry of the same subject part of the so-called 'Scuola Nuova' set depicting scenes from the Life of Christ. See RCIN 853255.
