ANONYMOUS, 16TH CENTURY

The Adoration of the Shepherds

c.1520-1560

Engraving | 62.6 x 44.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853253

An anonymous engraving printed from two plates, catalogued by Ruland (1876) as by a pupil of Marcantonio Raimondi. Only state. The names of Marco Dente, Agostino Veneziano and Bonasone have also been put forward in the past.

A drawing of this composition generally attributed to G.F. Penni now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.3460) has often been described as the model for the engraving. A photograph of the drawing can be found at RCIN 853257. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.

The lower half of the composition occurs in the tapestry of the same subject part of the so-called 'Scuola Nuova' set depicting scenes from the Life of Christ. See RCIN 853255.
