AFTER A WORK COPYING RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

St Paul preaching at Athens

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 13.9 x 18.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853201

A photograph of a drawing now in the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi, Florence (inv. no.1217E). The drawing is generally described as a copy of a now lost modello executed by Raphael for the cartoon of 'St Paul Preaching at Athens', one of the ten tapestries illustrating episodes from the lives of St Peter and St Paul commissioned by Pope Leo X for the Sistine Chapel. Two almost identical drawings of this subject survive in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no.3884) and in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (Vanderbilt Donation, inv. no.80-3-30), both of which are also considered to be copies. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
