St Paul preaching at Athens
c.1860-76Carbon print | 26.5 x 34.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853195
Two almost identical drawings of this subject survive in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no.1217 E) and in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (Vanderbilt Donation, inv. no.80-3-30), both of which are also considered to be copies. It has been suggested that they also may have been copied from the same lost original modello by Raphael.
The tapestry of 'St Paul Preaching at Athens' is one from a series of ten illustrating episodes from the lives of St Peter and St Paul commissioned from Raphael by Pope Leo X for the Sistine Chapel. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References
