ANONYMOUS, 16TH CENTURY

Putti Playing

c.1530-70

Engraving | 18.4 x 28.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853312

A reversed anonymous copy of an engraving by the Master of the Die (active 1530-60) thought to be after a design related to a set of tapestries traditionally known as the Giuochi di putti, most likely designed by Giovanni da Udine (perhaps with Raphael's involvement in the conception of the set) and woven in Flanders for Pope Leo X. Lettered with monograms: F.H. (lower right), and a die with the letter B (lower left).

For an impression of the engraving by the Master of the Die and further discussion, see RCIN 853311.
