MASTER OF THE DIE (ACTIVE 1530-60)

Putti Playing

c.1530-1560

Engraving | 18.4 x 27.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853311

A print after a design thought to be related to a set of tapestries traditionally known as the 'Giuochi di putti', most likely designed by Giovanni da Udine (perhaps with Raphael's involvement in the conception of the set) and woven in Flanders for Pope Leo X. First state. Signed with engraver's monogram (a die with the letter B, lower right).

A later edition of this engraving bears the inscription: 'Tapezzerie del Papa' (Tapestries of the Pope), which can also be found in the 1602 edition of a series of four engravings by the Master of the Die reproducing the composition of four tapestries from the 'Giuochi di putti' set. See RCINs 853313-22. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.

A reversed anonymous copy of this engraving, signed with the engraver's monogram F.H., can be found at RCIN 853312.
