This print is a copy in reverse of an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi (RCIN 851473) reproducing a painting by Raphael (c.1514) now in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna (inv. no.577). Lettered at lower left: RAPH. IVE. Given the differences between the engraving and the painting, it has been suggested that the print may have been based upon a lost design by Raphael, possibly copied in a drawing attributed to G.F. Penni now in the Petis Palais, Paris (inv. Dutuit 980; RCIN 851476) which may have served as the modello for the engraving. Photographs of the painting by Raphael at RCINs 851464, 851465, 851466.
