AFTER A WORK COPYING RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

A study of a seated male youth with his right arm raised up

c.1860-76

Carbon print | 25.9 x 18.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851511

A photograph of a drawing now in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no.254). The drawing is one of a number reproducing a study (probably by Raphael and now lost) related to the 'St John the Baptist in the Desert', a painting by the workshop of Raphael after designs by the master (c.1517-18) now in the Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence (inv. no.1446). A drawing in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no.545 E) has been long thought to be the original study by Raphael (see RCIN 851510). Photographs of other existing similar drawings at RCINs 851512, 851513.
