Self-Portrait of Raphael with another man
published 1729Engraving | 44.0 x 34.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850078
This print was part of the "Recueil d'estampes d'après les plus beaux tableaux et d'après les plus beaux desseins qui sont en France" (also known as 'Recueil Crozat'), a series of plates commissioned by Pierre Crozat, with 140 plates published in 1729 and a second volume in 1740.
It is commonly accepted that the man on the right is a self-portrait of Raphael, whereas the identity of the other sitter (generally identified as the 'Fencing Master') is an ongoing matter of dispute. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
A print after this portrait executed by a different printmaker is also included in the Raphael Collection under the category of "Portraits by Raphael", see RCIN 852115 for it.
