DOMINIQUE VIVANT DENON (1747-1825)

Raphael in his studio

c.1770-1820

Etching | 11.6 x 10.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850077

A reversed etching which is a partial copy of a print by Marcantonio Raimondi depicting a portrait of Raphael in his studio. See RCIN 850073 for the print by Raimondi. Signed by the printmaker and lettered with a title which identifies Marcantonio as the sitter.

The engraving by Raimondi was traditionally catalogued as after a drawing by Raphael, but scholars recently suggested that it could be an invention by Marcantonio himself. Also the date is a matter of dispute. See Bibliographic References for more information.
