Self-Portrait of Raphael with Another Man

dated 1805

Etching and engraving | RCIN 852115

A print after a painting attributed to Raphael (1519-20) currently in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.614). Included in 'Le Musée Français, recueil complet des tableaux, statues et bas-reliefs...', vol.II, Paris 1805.

It is commonly accepted that the man on the left is a self-portrait of Raphael, whereas the identity of the other sitter (generally identified as the 'Fencing Master') is ongoing matter of dispute. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.

A print after this portrait was included in the Raphael Collection under the category of "Portraits of Raphael", see RCIN 850078 for it.
  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
