Portrait of Pope Julius II
after 1860Carbon print | 45.1 x 33.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852034
The composition is known through several painted and engraved copies. Ruland (1876) followed Passavant’s opinion (1860) and regarded a painting in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence (inv.1912, no.79) as the original by Raphael. That painting is now unanimously accepted as a copy by Titian after Raphael’s original portrait now commonly identified with the painting hanging in the London National Gallery.
