Portrait of Doña Isabel de Requesens y Enríquez de Cardona-Anglesola

c.1729

Engraving | RCIN 852080

A print after the 'Portrait of Doña Isabel de Requesens y Enríquez de Cardona-Anglesola' when in the Cabinet du Roi (French Royal Collection); in reverse. The painting is now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.612). Lettered with production details, identification of the sitter as Joanna d'Aragon and attribution of the painting to Raphael. Published in ‘Recueil Crozat’, Paris 1729, plate 8. The authorship of the portrait - which was commission from Raphael seemingly by Cardinal Bibbiena around 1518 - is an ongoing matter of debate. According to Vasari, Raphael executed the sitter's head only. Modern scholars are divided, with some ascribing it entirely to Raphael, others to Giulio Romano and some others regarding the painting as the result of cooperation between the two. Henry/Joannides (2012) have recently catalogued it as by Giulio, perhaps with an intervention by Raphael. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
