ANTONIO GAIANI (D. 1821)

Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione

c.1750-1820

Engraving | 24.6 x 19.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852071

A print after a portrait of Baldassare Castiglione which, according to Passavant (1860) and Ruland (1876), was formerly in the collection of Cardinal (Lodovico) Valenti and later housed in the Palazzo Torlonia in Rome. Lettered with production details and wrong attribution to Raphael. Stamped with the blind stamp of Paolo Caronni (Lugt 4187) below image.

An identical portrait (presumably the same) is reproduced in a print by Paolo Fidanza, published in his 'Recueil de têtes choisies de personnages illustres' (1785) and described as being then in the collection of Monsignor Luigi Valenti Gonzaga, Archibishop of Cesarea (1725-1808). See RCIN 852068.

The painting is clearly derived from Raphael's portrait of Baldassare, which is currently housed in Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. 611). A photograph of the painting at RCIN 852066.
