LUIGI CERONI (ACTIVE 1855-72)
Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione
published 1851Engraving | 18.2 x 14.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852070
A print after a portrait of Baldassare Castiglione which, according to Passavant (1860) and Ruland (1876), was formerly in the collection of Cardinal (Lodovico) Valenti and later housed in the Palazzo Torlonia in Rome. Lettered with production details and traditional attribution to Raphael. Published in Dennistoun's Dukes of Urbino, Edinburgh 1851, plate VII.
An identical portrait (presumably the same) is reproduced in a print by Paolo Fidanza, published in his Recueil de têtes choisies de personnages illustres (1785) and described as being then in the collection of Monsignor Luigi Valenti Gonzaga, Archibishop of Cesarea (1725-1808). See RCIN 852068.
The painting is clearly derived from Raphael's portrait of Baldassare, which is currently housed in Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. 611). A photograph of the painting at RCIN 852066.
