LUIGI CERONI (ACTIVE 1855-72)

Portrait of a Young Woman

c.1855-72

Engraving with etching | 25.6 x 17.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852051

A print after a painting by Sebastiano del Piombo (c.1512) now in the Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence (inv. 1890, n. 1443). Lettered with title, production details and traditional attribution to Raphael.

The painting has been formerly attributed to Giorgione and Raphael but scholars are now unanimous in seeing it as a work by Sebastiano del Piombo. The identity of the sitter, who has been previously identified as Margherita Luciani (known as La Fornarina), is still a matter of dispute. Photographs of the painting at RCINs 852045, 852046.
