JAMES MOLLISON (FL.C. 1837)

A self-portrait of Raphael

published 1837

Etching, engraving and stipple | 17.0 x 12.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850015

A print reproducing a painting by Raphael (c.1505) now in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 1890). This print is signed by the printmaker with the attribution of the painting to Raphael. Lettered with the title. This print was published in "The Book of the Cartoons", issued in 1837 by R. Cattermole and illustrated with seven plates by A. Warren and the self-portrait of Raphael by J. Mollison as a frontispiece. Trimmed within the platemark.

This painting has been identified as a self-portrait of Raphael, but there is much debate about its authorship. This is partially due to its state of preservation (see Bibliographic References for further discussion).
