LUDWIG GRÜNER (1801-82)

A self-portrait of Raphael

published 1839

Etching | 21.9 x 16.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850014

An etching reproducing a painting by Raphael (c.1505) now in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 1890). This print is lettered with the names of the printmaker and the intermediate draughtsman with the attribution of the painting to Raphael. Lettered with the title and numbered "V". According to Ruland (1876), this print was published in Passavant's Atlas (pl. V). Trimmed within the platemark.

This painting has been identified as a self-portrait of Raphael, but there is much debate about its authorship. This is partially due to its state of preservation (see Bibliographic References for further discussion).
