OSCAR GUSTAV REJLANDER (1813-75)

A portrait of a young man

1858

Albumen print | 25.4 x 19.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852036

A photograph of a painting that Ruland (1876) catalogued as being then in the collection of F. Lucy, Esq. at Charlecote Park, Warwickshire. The picture was formerly attributed to Raphael and believed to depict Federico Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua.

Taylor (see Bibliographic References) states that Prince Albert commissioned Oscar G. Rejlander to copy "Raphael's study entitled Mantua and then provide photographic copies of the result" to be included in the Raphael Collection. The study can probably be identified with the painting photographed here. A bill for copying the painting is in the Royal Archives (RA PP2/32/9545) and it is dated December 1858. Another photograph of the painting at RCIN 852037.
