AFTER RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Studies for 'The Trinity with saints'

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 21.1 x 27.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853796

A photograph of a sheet of sketches by Raphael (c.1505-1507) now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.176) which contains studies for the heads and hands of saints in the upper half of the fresco The Trinity with Saints, painted by Raphael in the church of San Severo, Perugia, and dated to 1505 by a later inscription. Annotated on verso.

The Trinity with Saints is Raphael's earliest known fresco, but was left unfinished at his death in 1520. The bottom half of the fresco was then completed by Perugino. The sheet reproduced in this photograph also contains a small copy by Raphael probably after a drawing by Leonardo for the Battle of Anghiari in the Royal Collection (RCIN 912339). The sheet also bears the collector's mark of Thomas Lawrence.
