Christ seated

1836

Etching with engraving | RCIN 853793

A print reproducing the figure of Christ in the centre of the upper half of the fresco The Trinity with Saints, painted by Raphael in the church of San Severo, Perugia, and dated to 1505 by a later inscription. Lettered with the names of Raphael and the printmaker. On India paper. Annotated on verso.

The Trinity with Saints is Raphael's earliest known fresco, but was left unfinished at his death in 1520. The bottom half of the fresco was then completed by Perugino. See RCIN 853796 for a photograph of a preparatory drawing by Raphael, now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, for the fresco. According to Passavant's monograph on Raphael, which was published in 1839 (see Bibliographic References), this print and another by Krüger, reproducing the figure of St Maur from the fresco (see RCIN 853794), were made in 1836.
  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (1853-76)
