The Entombment of Christ
1770Etching | 38.3 x 28.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850549
An etching reproducing a drawing which was at the time (1770) in the collection of Anton Mengs and that Ruland (1876) catalogued as being then in the Ducal collection at Gotha. Signed and dated by the printmaker with dedication to Anton Mengs.
Massari (see Bibliographic References) catalogued this drawing (currently untraceable) as being executed by Raphael and as being stylistically related to a drawing by the master now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.172; see RCIN 850284 for a photograph of it). This now lost drawing was used as a modello for an engraving by Giulio Bonasone (c.1544), which was in turn reproduced in reverse in a print by Enea Vico (1548) (see RCIN 850548 for the print by Vico).
