ENEA VICO (1523-67)

The Entombment of Christ

dated 1548

Engraving | 35.5 x 25.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850548

An engraving by Enea Vico depicting The Entombment of Christ. Signed and dated by the printmaker. Trimmed within the platemark.

Massari (see Bibliographic References) catalogued this print as reproducing in reverse an engraving by Giulio Bonasone (c.1544). This engraving is based on a drawing that Ruland (1876) catalogued as being then in the Ducal collection at Gotha (see RCINs 850546 and 850547 for photographs of this drawing). The drawing (currently untraceable) was catalogued by Massari as executed by Raphael and as being stylistically related to a drawing by the master now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.172; see RCIN 850284 for a photograph of it). This untraceable drawing was also reproduced in a print (1770) when in the collection of Anton Mengs, see RCIN 850549 for this print.
