The Entombment of Christ
c.1853-76Albumen print | RCIN 850547
Two photographs of a drawing depicting The Entombment of Christ that Ruland (1876) catalogued as being then in the Ducal collection at Gotha.
Massari (see Bibliographic References) catalogued this drawing (currently untraceable) as by Raphael and as being stylistically related to a drawing by the master now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.172; see RCIN 850284 for a photograph of it). Massari notes that this now lost drawing was used as a modello by Giulio Bonasone for an engraving (c.1544) which was in turn reproduced in reverse in a print by Enea Vico (1548) (see RCIN 850548 for the print by Vico). This drawing was also reproduced in a print (1770) when in the collection of Anton Mengs, see RCIN 850549 for this print.
