HENDRICK VAN DER BORCHT THE YOUNGER (1614 - 1666 ?)

The Entombment of Christ

dated 1645

Etching | 27.9 x 20.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850546

An etching by Hendrick van der Borcht depicting The Entombment of Christ. Signed and dated by the printmaker, with the attribution of the original design to Raphael. Lettered with the name of Parmigianino as the intermediate draughtsman, text in Latin and dedication to Abramo Neuville. Trimmed within the platemark.

Massari (see Bibliographic References) catalogued this print as being after a drawing attributed to Parmigianino, which was previously in the collection of Lord Arundel (as lettered in the print). Another print after this drawing is at RCIN 850545. Parmigianino also etched 'The Entombment of Christ' in two different versions which Gnann (see Bibliographic References) dates c.1524-1525.
