Photograph of four Zouave soldiers gathered in an area of open land. Two lie on the ground facing each other with equipment spread out around them. Two other Zouaves stand to the left with the soldier in front holding a long gun. They are all wearing the traditional Zouave uniform of loose trousers, open jackets and turbans and have rucksacks with them. This photograph, printed by Jabez Hughes in 1883, is a carbon print pasted over the original photograph.
This is one of a series of photographs of soldiers who served in the Crimean War in an album compiled by Queen Victoria. The album also includes photographs commissioned by The Queen of wounded veterans she met at Buckingham Palace and Chatham Military Hospital.
