1883 copy after 1855 original

Carbon print | 17.9 x 15.4 cm (image) | RCIN 2500178

Photograph of a group of Zouave and French soldiers gathered together on rocky ground. Three sit in the centre with one standing to the left facing right and another standing to the right with his right leg resting on a rock. Those seated are wearing the traditional Zouave uniform of loose trousers and open jackets and the others wear long military coats. Several are smoking pipes. This photograph, printed by Jabez Hughes in 1883, is a carbon print pasted over the original photograph.

This is one of a series of photographs of soldiers who fought in the Crimean War in an album compiled by Queen Victoria. The album also contains photographs commissioned by The Queen of wounded veterans she met at Buckingham Palace and Chatham Military Hospital.
