Photograph of Sir Rawlinson sitting on a chair covered by an animal fur. He is resting his right elbow on the table beside him and holding his hand up to his face. He is wearing a dark jacket and tie and there is a cloth draped behind him. Sir Rawlinson was a civil engineer who was part of the Sanitary Commission sent by the War Office to improve the conditions of the Crimean War hospitals. Through a series of basic measures the Commission succeeded in improving the standard of hygiene at the hospitals and reducing the death rate.
