Photograph of Ismail Pacha (1813-1865) receiving his chibouque. Ismail Pacha is sitting on a wicker basket turned on its side with his legs crossed. He has taken the chibouque in his left hand from the Turkish soldier standing beside him to the right. Three more soldiers stand behind him. All are wearing military uniform and carry swords. There is open land behind. Ismail Pacha was a Hungarian soldier whose real name was György Kmety. After the Hungarian Revolution he joined the Ottoman army and played a significant role in the Crimean War. A chibouque is a long stemmed Turkish tobacco pipe.
