Photograph of Ismail Pacha (1813-1865) offering his chibouque to an officer sitting beside him to the right. Both are sitting on wicker baskets turned on their sides and are wearing military uniform. Three soldiers and a horse stand behind them, and there is open land in the distance. Ismail Pacha was a Hungarian soldier whose real name was György Kmety. After the Hungarian Revolution he joined the Ottoman army and played a significant role in the Crimean War. A chibouque is a long stemmed Turkish tobacco pipe.
