Mar 1855

Albumen print | 20.8 x 26.9 cm (image) | RCIN 2500465

Photograph of HMS Diamond and HMS Wasp anchored in the harbour at Balaklava. A large number of ships with tall masts are docked in the harbour, along with a couple of rowing boats. In the foreground there is a rail track and a stack of large wooden crates. There are also a number of people and horses, blurred slightly through movement. The town of Balaklava was used as a base by the British during the Crimean War. Supplies arrived by ship into the small harbour and were transported by rail to troops engaged in the Siege of Sevastopol.
