The Old Post Office, Balaklava

15 Mar 1855

Salted paper print | 19.9 x 25.4 cm (image) | RCIN 2500464

Photograph of the Old Post Office at Balaklava. The building is in poor condition with a damaged tile roof. Four men stand on a wooden platform and staircase at the front of the building, with a row of glass bottles beside them. In the foreground there is a pile of railway track surrounded by stones. The town of Balaklava was used as a base by the British during the Crimean War. Supplies arrived by ship into the small harbour and were transported by rail to troops engaged in the Siege of Sevastopol.
