Photograph of Colonel Airey (1812-1898) and Major Hallewell (1822-1869) with a horse. Colonel Airey stands beside the horse, both facing left. Major Hallewell lies on the ground looking up at Colonel Airey. Both are wearing military uniform and carrying swords. Two servants stand to the left, one holding a coat and the other the reins of the horse. There is an area of open land behind them with a horse grazing to the left. Colonel Airey and Major Hallewell both served with the Light Division during the Crimean War. Major Hallewell remained in contact with Roger Fenton after they returned from the Crimea.
