5 May 1855Albumen print | 18.4 x 15.9 cm (image) | RCIN 2500371
Photograph of two Zouave soldiers passing a water bottle between them. One is sitting on a rock looking up at the other Zouave who stands to the right. The seated Zouave is holding the water bottle up in his left hand and has several bags on the ground beside him. Both are wearing the traditional Zouave uniform of loose trousers, open jackets and sashes around the waist. There are two tents behind them.
Zouave regiments from Algeria served with the French army during the Crimean War. It was the first time that they had fought outside of North Africa.
