Photograph taken at Windsor Castle of (left to right), Princess Royal (1840-1901), later Empress Friedrich, holding a parasol; Princess Alice (1843-78), later Grand Duchess of Hesse; Queen Victoria (1819-1901) seated in an open carriage and the Prince of Wales (1841-1910) later King Edward VII who stands alongside the carriage. A Groom stands on the far left of the photograph with the white carriage horse. This group photograph was taken before lunch on the seventeenth wedding anniversary of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The Queen described the day in her journal: 'We went into our sitting room, where the 7 children were assembled, all in different costumes. Vicky, in the mother's dress from Little Red Riding Hood, Bertie and Alice in the costumes of James V and his Queen, from last year's Tableau, all the others in costumes worn before. Vicky gave me a magnificent bouquet with white flowers, which the good Child had taken such trouble to get for me, and a lovely drawing ... She and Alice also gave their Papa drawings and the latter gave me a bouquet, - Louise a drawing, - her first production. Arthur had specially written out the dates of the Kings.'
