'The Last Judgement by Michel Angelo [sic]'

1892 copy after an original of 1853

Carbon print | 18.2 x 12.9 cm (image) | RCIN 2905933

Photograph of a drawing by Michelangelo (1475-1564) of the Last Judgement (painting dates c.1536-41). Christ is represented in the top centre of the drawing with his right arm raised above his head from which emanate the various saints in their martyrdom.

The caption indicates the drawing was in the possession of a 'Dr. Praun', likely a descendent of Paul von Praun (1548-161). von Praun was a German collector of old master drawings. His collection remained intact and was held by the von Praun family in Nuremberg until the majority was sold around 1803. A small selection of works, including drawings by Michelangelo, remained with the von Praun family. Based on the caption, it seems this work remained in the care of the von Praun family.

The 1892 carbon copy print is adhered over the top of the original albumen print.
