Photograph of a full length portrait of Prince Alfred, later The Duke of Saxe Coburg and Gotha (1844-1900), standing wearing Naval Cadets uniform. He faces three-quarters to the left and turns his head towards the camera. He gazes to the right. Under his left arm he holds a telescope which he supports with his right hand. A sheathed dagger hangs by his left hip.

In August 1858, Prince Alfred passed his naval entrance exam with high marks.
