RY 'Fairy' steaming through the Fleet [Spithead]
11 - 11 Mar 1854Albumen print | 20.5 x 14.6 cm (image) | RCIN 2906008
Photograph of the British Naval Fleet on the sea at Spithead with the Royal Yacht Fairy carrying the Royal family, in the centre of the background. In the foreground are silhouetted a group of figures at the harbour watching the scene.
This photograph is part of a set made by Fenton at the time of the departure of the fleet for the Crimea, under the command of Admiral Sir Charles Napier. The Royal Family, on board the Fairy, watched the sight with interest. Fenton's set of eight pictures of the Fleet at Spithead represent an early attempt to record several stages of a particular occasion. Six of these prints were exhibited by the Photographic Society in 1855.
