DR ERNST BECKER (1826-88)

Prince Arthur and Prince Alfred in the costume of Sikh Princes, Osborne

6 - 6 Sep 1854

Albumen print | 10.9 x 13.8 cm (image) | RCIN 2906169

Photograph with Prince Arthur, later the Duke of Connaught (1850-1942) and Prince Alfred, later Duke of Edinburgh and of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (1844-1900), seated on a chaise longue. Prince Arthur faces the viewer whilst Prince Alfred is captured in profile, facing left.  Both princes wear traditional Indian dress.

Prince Alfred and Prince Arthur were the second and third sons of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Although the royal children often took part in plays and tableaux vivants, which they sometimes presented on special occasions, there seems to be no special significance about the date of this photograph. However, it was taken soon after the visit of the Maharajah Dalip Singh to Osborne in August 1854 so it is possible the costumes were a gift from him.
