JOSEPH CAMILLE THOMAS CONTINI (1827-1892)

Looking East from Villa Leader, Cannes, towards the Serin Islands and Sir H. Taylor's Chateau

c. 1861

Albumen print | 18.4 x 25.3 cm (image) (image) | RCIN 2932793

Photograph of a view from the terrace of Sir John Temple-Leader's villa with Sir General Herbert Taylor's chateau in the background. Behind the building is the sea and the outline of the Serin islands. In the middle ground are gardens and trees with an iron trellis like structure immediately in front of the terrace from which the view is taken.

The politician Sir John Temple-Leader (1810-1903) was one of the first to build a villa in Cannes at the end of the 1840's which led to the establishment of Cannes as a resort patronised by English aristocratic circles. An area of the city is still known as the Quartier des Anglais.
