Following Albert’s premature death, Victoria commissioned the creation of photographs and decorative objects that memorialised her beloved husband

There is an inscription on the pedestal reading ' TO COMMEMORATE THE/INAUGURATION AND COMPLETION/OF THESE GREAT WORKS THIS MEMORIAL/HAS BEEN ERECTED BY/SIR EDWARD WILLIAM WATKIN,MP/CHAIRMAN OF THE MANCHESTER, SHFFIELD AND LINCOLNSHIRE RAILWAY COMPANY/1879.'
