There is an inscription on the pedestal reading 'THE NEW DOCK/CONNECTING THE ROYAL DOCK/WITH THE OLD DOCK/WAS OPENED BY THEIR ROYAL HIGHNESSES/THE PRINCE AND PRINCESS OF WALES/ON THE 22ND JULY,1879'
