GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)
York Minster - the Stone Screen
c.1861Albumen print | 7.5 x 7.0 cm (image) | RCIN 2320234
Photograph of the Quire screen inside York Minster as viewed towards the east. In front of the screen to the left of the arch is a man with his back to the viewer facing the screen.
The inclusion of a figure in the foreground is no doubt a deliberate attempt by the photographer to add a sense of scale to the scene. The Quire screen was designed in 1420 and features 15 statues of the Kings of England from William the Conqueror to Henry VI. Wilson took a number of views of the interior of St Paul's Cathedral and Salisbury Cathedral from 1859 to 1860. This photograph of York Minster joins the body of work that he produced between 1861-3 which included Winchester, Durham and Exeter cathedrals.
