AFTER GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)
York Minster - The Nave, looking East
1883 after an original of c. 1861Carbon print | 8.4 x 7.4 cm (image) | RCIN 2320233
Photograph of the interior of York Minster, looking east, showing the Nave with the King's Screen and organ in the background.
The organ dates from 1832 and replaced the earlier organ that was destroyed in the fire of 1829. Wilson took a number of views of the interior of St Paul's Cathedral and Salisbury Cathedral from 1859 to 1860. This photograph of York Minster joins the body of work that he produced between 1861-3 which included Winchester, Durham and Exeter cathedrals. This photograph is a carbon copy of the original albumen photograph. Carbon was a process that was less susceptible to fading, unlike an albumen print that is prone to discolouration over time.
