Technological improvements enabled Prince Albert to collect photographs of places that were significant to him

ATTRIBUTED TO FREDERICK HOLLAND MARES

'The Eagle's Nest, Killarney'

c.1880 after an original of c.1860

Carbon print | 7.6 x 7.2 cm (image) | RCIN 2320108

Photograph of two men seated in a boat, moored by the edge of a lake. The men both wear dark colour jackets and bowler hats. The Eagle's Nest mountain, Killarney, is located in the background. Photograph taken from the east.

A carbon copy is adhered on top of the original albumen print. Carbon prints are more stable compared to albumen prints, the latter prone to fading. Carbon copies were therefore created for posterity.
