AFTER A WORK COPYING RAPHAEL (1483-1520)

Two apostles after 'The Transfiguration'

1858

Albumen print? | 22.4 x 16.6 cm (image) | RCIN 2864307

A photograph of a drawing now in the Albertina, Vienna (inv.no. 190), which is a copy after a preparatory drawing by Raphael now in the Devonshire Collection, Chatsworth (inv. no. 51) for the apostles at the lower left of 'The Transfiguration', a painting executed by Raphael (c.1518-1520) now in the Pinacoteca Vaticana, Rome (inv. no. 333). See RCIN 850327 for a photograph of the painting depicting two different scenes: the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor (in the upper register) and the Healing of the possessed boy (in the lower register), which are based on two distinct passages from the Gospels of Matthew (17: 1-20), Mark (9: 2-29) and Luke (9: 28-43). Many drawings and 'modelli' for this painting survive, which are vital to understanding the genesis and finalisation of the pictorial programme.

For more information see RCIN 850342, a copy of this photograph in the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection, portfolio 4 (970563)
