Prince Albert recognised the importance of photography to record and document notable exhibitions and works of art

AFTER? RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

The head of a youth

1860

Albumen print | 28.9 x 26 cm (image) | RCIN 2864194

A photograph of a drawing now in the Palais des Beaux Arts, Lille (inv. no. 449). Annotated on the verso.

This drawing has been attributed to various artists. An historic attribution to Raphael was rejected by Joannides and other scholars, but the Palais des Beaux Arts, Lille (see Bibliographic References) catalogued it as possibly by the master, suggesting a similarity with the head of a man wearing a turban and pointing at a book on the left of the Disputa (The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament) painted by Raphael around 1508-09 in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican. See RCIN 852371 for a print reproducing this fresco.

A copy of this photograph (RCIN 854478) can be found in the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection, portfolio 48 (970608)
