'Portion of Votive Picture. Enamel by Léonard Limosin'
c. 1855Albumen print? | RCIN 2864514
Photograph of a Limoges enamel plaque created in 1553 by Léonard Limosin (c.1506-1577), part of his Crucifixion retable for Saint-Chapelle, Paris (see RCIN 2864504). As with the rest of the retable, this fragment has been in the collection of the Louvre since 1816 (MR 208 1). It shows an angel in full-length, facing to the viewer and holding Veronica's Veil with the imprint of Christ's face. According to Christian traditions, the relic also forms an Instrument of Passion.
